How do I become a falconer? So you're considering pursuing the falconry lifestyle? That's right. It's a lifestyle, not a hobby. It taxes your time, your finances and your relationships with others. It makes you question your intelligence, your drive and your sanity. The bottom line: it's hard. But if you love hunting, the outdoors, conservation and birds of prey, falconry may be for you. Falconry is the taking of wild quarry with trained birds of prey. Don't be fooled by any other definition you may have read or heard. Falconry is not petkeeping. It's a blood sport. Still on board? Becoming a licensed falconer is not an easy process, and it won't happen overnight, but if you're passionate and persistent, you just may have what it takes to thrive in this sport. While falconry is also federally-regulated, each state issues it's own permits and has its own specific regulations. If you're interested in becoming a licensed falconer, the best place to start is by contacting your state's falconry club. In West Virginia, The West Virginia Falconry Club is happy to guide prospective falconers in the state's permitting process. More information can be found on the Club's website at: www.wvfalconry.org.
