We've used a variety of squirrel pokers over the years. While some people are adamently against them citing safety concerns, used properly, our squirrel pokers minimize bite risk and dispatch your quarry humanely, even large buck fox squirrels that the smaller falconers here have trouble dispatching with chest compression.
Our handcrafted squirrel pokers, made by Tim Woody at Deeply Rooted Treeworks, sport a left or right-handed deer antler handle with smooth finger grooves for a comfortable grip. The shafts are ground from a railroad spike. The three-sided design gradually increases in size, making them easy to puncture tough squirrel skin, but wide enough to hit internal organs on the first try. This is one of our favorite things about the design. Multiple stabs are very rarely necessary. The sides of the shafts are not sharp, so your bird won't hurt herself if she grabs them.
Each poker is handcrafted, and the deer antler handles vary. They are truly one of a kind.
We also offer custom kydex holsters that can be clipped to your hawking vest or belt. We love carrying our squirrel pokers in a custom kydex holster. Over the years, we've lost a few pokers in the woods when they've gotten caught on briars or branches or the like. It's gut wrenching when they're special. After losing a few, our custom kydex holster was born. It went through many iterations of the perfect fit and also the perfect clip.
Our newest and most reliable holsters utilize a Blade Tech Tek-Lok clip. What we love about this clip is the extra lock once you've snapped it into place. The kydex itself is custom molded to fit your poker. Our pokers are specifically designed with a square ledge near the handle so they can click into the holster and not slide out. Since going to this specfic design, we have not lost a poker while hawking.
